Carter Mazur Named to USA's Roster for 2022 World Junior Championship

Freshman forward was one of 25 players that made the U.S. National Junior Team

DENVER – Freshman Carter Mazur of the University of Denver hockey team has been named to the U.S. National Junior Team's final roster for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, USA Hockey revealed on Tuesday.

Mazur, 19, was one of 31 players vying for 25 spots at USA Hockey's training camp, which began on Sunday in Plymouth, Michigan. The 2022 World Juniors will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. The United States is the defending gold medalist.

Mazur has 17 points (9g/8a) in 16 games this season for the Pioneers, ranking tied for fourth on the team in scoring and tied for second in goals. Nationally, he is tied with teammate Massimo Rizzo for first among all NCAA freshmen with nine goals while ranking fourth in points.

He opened his college career by scoring two goals on Oct 8 versus Arizona State, becoming the first DU freshman to tally twice in his NCAA debut since Luke Salazar on Oct. 11, 2008 against Notre Dame. The forward recorded a season-best three points (1g/2a) on Nov. 12 versus Western Michigan and then added another goal the following night against the Broncos, helping him earn conference honors as the NCHC's Rookie of the Week.

The Jackson, Michigan, native was named the NCHC Rookie of the Month for November after totaling five goals and two assists in six games. He enters DU's holiday break on a career-high, eight-game point streak (7g/7a), the longest of the season by Denver player.

Internationally, Mazur played seven games with the Under-17 team at the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2018-19 but spent most of his time that season with the Little Caesars 16-Under squad. He participated in Team USA's World Junior Summer Showcase this past July after being selected by the Detroit Red Wings at 70th overall (third round) in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Prior to coming to Denver, Mazur skated two seasons with the Tri-City Storm in the United States Hockey League and recorded 58 points (26g/32a) in 99 career games. Last year, he registered 44 points (20g/24a) in 47 games while also serving as the team captain.

DU teammate Sean Behrens was also invited to the U.S. training camp, but he was unable to attend after being in COVID-19 protocol this past weekend. Current Pioneer junior forward Bobby Brink, 20, was on Team USA's roster last year and helped the Americans win their fifth World Junior title.

UP NEXT: Denver is on its holiday break and returns to action when it hosts Alaska Fairbanks to ring in the New Year. The Pioneers play the Nanooks on Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. MT before the rematch on Jan. 1 at 6 p.m. MT.
