DENVER – The University of Denver gymnastics team took another step closer to the start of the 2022 season by hosting its annual Crimson & Gold Intrasquad on Sunday.
For the first time ever, the event was hosted in Magness Arena, and Denver was able to welcome back fans without capacity restrictions for the first time since the 2020 season.
DU did not compete with its full lineup on Sunday but did have at least six student-athletes on all four events. Denver is expecting to have its full team for the January 9 season opener.
"I thought our team was great tonight with their energy and enthusiasm," head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "I though they capitalized on being in Magness for the first time for an intrasquad, and it will help them be prepared for January 9."
She added, "Some of our student-athletes got tremendous experience competing today, and we're looking forward to debuting the entire team in January."
Among the notable performances were freshmen
Mia Hebinck and
Momoko Iwai, who competed in Denver leotards for the first time in their careers and did so on three events each. Sophomore
Rylie Mundell had three strong performances on vault, bars and beam while fellow sophomore
Jessica Hutchinson competed in the all-around.
Graduate student
Lynnzee Brown competed on vault, bars and beam while treating the crowd to a sneak peek of her floor routine. DU also saw performances from graduate student
Emily Glynn on all three of her events.
Junior transfer
Emma Brown was welcomed back to DU with a hit routine on beam, along with junior
Callie Schlottman who also had a strong beam performance. Sophomores
Rosie Casali and
Abbie Thompson, and senior
Alexandria Ruiz had lineup appearances throughout the meet.
Denver will resume training after the holiday break in anticipation of the 2022 season opener on Sunday, January 9, at 2 p.m. against San Jose State.
