DENVER – The Denver Pioneers women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Omaha to earn a split in the two-game series on Monday in Hamilton Gymnasium.
Turning Point
Omaha's comeback in the fourth set saw it face match point six times before tying the set 25-25 and winning the last two points.
First Set
Denver's first set was characterized by a -.022-attack percentage and 10 attack errors. The Pioneers 9-8 lead was their second and last of the opening set. Denver tied the set 15-15 before the Mavericks pulled away.
Second Set
The Pioneers opened the set on a 5-0 run, stretched that lead to eight at 14-7 and never looked back. Denver's play featured a much-improved .222 attack percentage and only three attack errors.
Third Set
It took 14 points for either team to get two points of separation in a back-and-forth third set. Denver stretched that advantage to 21-18 before allowing Omaha back in the set. The Mavericks tied the set 21-21 before taking four of the last six points.
Fourth Set
Denver and Omaha played tight until the Pioneers took a one-point lead at 13-12 and won five of the next six points to establish their largest advantage of the set, 18-13. Omaha showed resiliency to bring the set to 21-19, then pressed again after Denver went up 24-20. The Mavericks faced match point for the first time at 24-20 before making their comeback.
