Series History
Denver is 130-152-16 all-time against North Dakota. The Pioneers are 2-3-0 against the Fighting Hawks this season, having defeated North Dakota 3-2 on Dec. 8 and 4-1 on Jan. 17.

What's Next
After its two-game series vs. the Fighting Hawks, Denver will return to the Mile High City for a two-game set against Colorado College on Feb. 26-27.

  • Ralph Backstrom, the fifth head coach in program history, passed away at 83 on Sunday. As coach of the Pioneers from 1981-90, Backstrom reached a high point of his career in 1985-86 when he helped DU to a 34-13-1 season that saw the team win the WCHA regular-season and playoff titles and earn a trip to the Frozen Four. He was named WCHA and National Coach of the Year in that season. Backstrom finished with a 182-174-14 all-time record. As a player, Ralph appeared in more than 1,000 NHL games as a six-time Stanley Cup champion and NHL All-Star for the Montreal Canadiens. Following his playing & coaching careers, Backstrom helped grow the game as founder and president of Roller Hockey International and founder, general manager and president of the Colorado Eagles
  • On Feb. 8 the NCHC announced the 2021 Frozen Faceoff would be moved to a single-elimination format in Grand Forks, N.D. from March 12-16. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Denver ('14 &'18) and Minnesota Duluth ('17, '19) are the only two-time winners of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff
  • The Pioneers have outshot their opponent in 15 of 19 games including eight of the last nine. The Crimson & Gold have fired 30 or more shots in 10 games and 35 or more shots in four games
  • Denver ranks 8th in the NCAA in shots on goal/game margin (+6.84). The Pioneers rank 4th in the NCAA in shots against/game (24.5). Carter Savoie leads the team and ranks 3rd in the NCHC in shots (74). He leads the team and ranks 3rd in the NCHC in shots/game (3.89)
  • The Pioneers had 10 alumni on 2020-21 NHL Opening Day rosters: Danton Heinen, Troy Terry (Anaheim Ducks), Ian Mitchell (Chicago Black-hawks), Trevor Moore (Los Angeles Kings), Will Butcher (New Jersey Devils), Scott Mayfield (New York Islanders), Jason Zucker (Pittsburgh Penguins), Dylan Gambrell (San Jose Sharks), Tyler Bozak (St. Louis Blues) and Paul Stastny (Winnipeg Jets). Logan O'Connor (Colorado Avalanche) and Dakota Mermis (Minnesota Wild) are traveling with their NHL teams as members of their taxi squads
  • The Pioneers are wearing jersey patches with the letters "JB" honoring the late Joy Burns whose vast contributions to DU included becoming the first woman to chair the University of Denver Board of Trustees, which she did for 17 years, making direct contributions to the physical trans-formation of campus and helping the athletic department move to Division I
