DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball head coach
Jeff Wulbrun announced another addition to his coaching staff on Thursday, with
Rob Zewe coming on board as an Assistant Coach. Zewe will begin his role immediately for the Pioneers.
"In building my staff the most important criteria was finding men of high character and integrity," Wulbrun said. "
Rob Zewe reflects all the values, standards and principles that I think are important as a man, coach, teacher and mentor to the young men in my program. Rob lives his life by doing what is right, he will be such a positive influence on our players and a great role model for them on and off the court.
"As an on-the-floor coach, I believe Rob has few peers. Player development will be a major component to the success of our program and Rob is an excellent teacher of the game and skill coach, who always pays great attention to the smallest details in his work with our players."
Zewe joins the Pioneers after spending the last two seasons as a member of the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Wulbrun's staff here at Denver," Zewe said. "Working alongside and learning from him is something I am really looking forward to. Since I've stepped foot on campus, the faculty and entire Denver community has been extremely welcoming. I am excited to get to work and start building something special here."
In his first year with the program, Zewe and the 2019-20 Titans had their season cut short just prior to the start of the Big West Tournament due to COVID-19.
2019-20 seniors Jackson Rowe (France), Davon Clare (Portugal) and Austen Awosika (Austria) each signed professional contracts to play in their respective country's top leagues.
"A great assistant coach wears a lot of hats and needs to be extremely organized and disciplined with his responsibilities and Rob exemplifies this in all facets of his job," Wulbrun said. "He is regarded among his peers in college basketball as the ultimate grinder, which is a tremendous complement. Rob brings his hard hat and lunch box to work every day, with one agenda in mind, to do what's in the best interest of the University of Denver Basketball program."
Zewe joined the Titans after spending the 2018-19 season as a graduate assistant coach at Nevada. The Wolf Pack reached the NCAA Tournament, won the Mountain West Championship for the third straight year and tied a school record by winning 29 games.
During his time at Nevada, Zewe helped Jordan Caroline and Caleb Martin earn first-team all-conference honors while Cody Martin was named to the third team. Jazz Johnson was chosen as the Sixth Man of the Year. Caroline and both Martins were selected to the defensive team. Prior to the season, the Martin twins and Caroline were named to the 2018-19 MW media preseason team.
Caroline and Caleb Martin were also named to the United States Basketball Writers Association District VIII team today for the second year in a row. Caleb Martin was named the District VIII Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Cody Martin went on to be drafted No. 36 by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2019 NBA Draft. Also, Caleb Martin signed with the Charlotte Hornets, Jordan Caroline signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Tre'Shawn Thurman signed with the Detroit Pistons. In addition, Jalen Harris – who redshirted with the Wolf Pack during the 2018-19 season – went on to be drafted No. 59 by the Toronto Raptors in the 2020 NBA Draft.
His primary responsibilities at Nevada included working with head coach Eric Musselman and assistant coach Gus Argenal in scouting preparation, video breakdowns, recruiting and on-court drills. He conducted individual workouts and developed creative content to send to recruits and their families.
Prior to Nevada, he was an assistant coach for two years at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was responsible for player development, video analysis, scouting reports and recruiting. The team won back-to-back regular season PSAC Championships and was ranked as high No. 2 in the country. He helped develop two All-Americans in Anthony Glover Jr. and Jacobo Diaz.
Denver has started its offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
