WASHINGTON D.C. – The [6/6] University of Denver men's lacrosse team fell to in overtime at [10/11] Georgetown 11-10 on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. Saturday's win put Georgetown a half game ahead of Denver in the 2021 BIG EAST Standings.
Inside the Box Score:
Jack Thompson stopped a career-high 15 shots in the loss.
Ethan Walker led the Pioneers with four points on three goals and an assist, completing his sixth hat trick of the season and the 31
st of his career.
Jack Hannah and
Lucas Cotler finished with a pair of goals apiece.
Alex Simmons had a goal and an assist, and
Jackson Morrill had multiple assists to extend his point streak.
First Half:
Denver got the first three goals out of the gate to start the contest as Walker, Simmons and Cotler found the back of the net inside the first 3:39.
The teams exchanged two-goal runs next. For the Pioneers,
Malik Sparrow scored a highlight pole goal with 1:04 to go in the first quarter and
Riley Curtis scored on the man-up to start the second quarter to push Denver's lead back to three at 5-2. Georgetown responded with another two-goal spurt, both goals coming off the stick of Dylan Watson.
Jack Hannah ended the first half scoring, giving Denver six goals from six different goal scorers to make it 6-4 at the intermission.
Third Quarter:
Georgetown cut the lead to one in the next 15 minutes, outscoring the Pioneers 4-3 in the third quarter. Alex Mazzone and Walker exchanged goals in the first 5:14 of the third frame. Graham Bundy Jr. and Cotler exchanged the next punches, keeping Denver two goals ahead at 8-6. Dylan Watson and Hannah went another round to make it 9-7 with 2:19 to go in the third. Declan McDermott's eighth of the year cut Denver's lead to one at 9-8 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Fourth Quarter:
Watson and Jake Carraway made it a 3-0 run for Georgetown to give the Hoyas their first lead of the day at 10-9 with 5:11 to go in the fourth. Walker tied the game with 2:38 to play, but neither team could win it in regulation.
Overtime:
The Hoyas won the faceoff in overtime and were able to get a couple of resets before scoring 2:52 into the extra period off the stick of McDermott.
Up Next: The University of Denver men's lacrosse team, presented by
Your Front Range Toyota Stores, will return home next Saturday to take on St. John's on Senior Day. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Denver 1600 and Pioneer Vision.
