Former DU head coach Bill Tierney became the first coach to win both an NCAA Division I and professional title in his career
DENVER – The University of Denver men's lacrosse program had four former players, and a former head coach lift the Premier Lacrosse League trophy on Sunday after the Philadelphia Waterdogs dominated the Denver Outlaws 14-4 in the championship tilt in New Jersey.
Former Denver head coach Bill Tierney, who won his seventh NCAA Division I championship when he led the Pioneers to their first national championship in 2015, became the first coach to win both an NCAA Division I championship and a professional title with the victory on Sunday. Tierney's Waterdogs put on a defensive masterclass their head coach would be proud of, holding the Outlaws off the scoresheet in the entirety of the second half.
Alec Stathakis led the former Pioneer student-athletes in the championship on Sunday, going 11-for-20 from the stripe and scoring in the opening couple of minutes to give the Waterdogs a 2-1 lead. Casey Wilson and Jimmy Freehill had a caused turnover apiece in the win.
