[9/9] Denver’s Offense Explodes Early in 19-11 Win over St. John’s

The Pioneers will close out the regular season at Villanova Wednesday at 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT

DENVER  – The [9/9] University of Denver men's lacrosse team raced out to a 15-0 lead in the first 18:28 en-route to a 19-11 win over St. John's on Senior Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Alex Simmons led the Pioneers with four goals. Jackson Morrill led Denver with five points on a goal and four assists. JJ Sillstrop and Lucas Cotler had three points apiece.
 
Denver's faceoff unit kept Denver's first-half run going. TD Ierlan finished a perfect 12-for-12. Alec Stathakis won his final 10 for a 10-for-11 day and Brett Boos finished 6-for-10 from the stripe. Stathakis and Ierlan both finished with nine ground balls.
 
First Quarter:
Denver opened the game with a single-quarter school record 12 goals. The Pioneers had 11 different goal scorers in the first quarter with only Simmons scoring multiple goals in the first 15 minutes. Jack Hannah scored the opener, his 29th of the season. Denver also got first quarter goals from Sillstrop, Ellis Geis, Schuyler Blair, Ted Sullivan, Morrill, Cotler, Kyle Smith and Riley Curtis.
 
Second Quarter:
The Pioneers scored the first three of the second quarter to make it a 15-0 run to start the contest. Danny Logan got Denver's first goal of the second quarter, his fourth of the season. Simmons' third made it 15-0. St. John's scored two-straight before Reed Babcock capped the first-half scoring with his fourth of the campaign.
 
Second Half:
St. John's outscored Denver 9-3 in the second half. Sam Dwinell scored twice in the second half, before Carter Brand scored his first goal of the season.
 
Significant Stats:
  • Denver scored a single-quarter school record 12 goals in the first quarter of today's win.
  • The Pioneers tied a school record for faceoff wins as a team with 28 (Ierlan 12, Stathakis 10, Boos 6)
  • DU had 14 different goal scorers to tie a school record.
Up Next: The University of Denver men's lacrosse team, presented by Your Front Range Toyota Stores, will close out the 2021 regular season on Wednesday with a trip to Villanova. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT. The game will be streamed live on Villanova's website and broadcast live on ESPN Denver 1600.
