Rubio Named Coach of the Year; Four Pios Named All-Summit League

The Pioneers will take on North Dakota in the first Summit League Semifinal on Friday at 9 a.m. MT at the Denver Tennis Park

DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team placed four student-athletes on the 2021 All-Summit League Tennis Team, and head coach Ricardo Rubio was named the league's coach of the year.

James Davis, Nicolas Herrero Cuesta, Ignacio Rivero Crespo and Matt Summers were named to the All-Summit League Team.

Rubio was named the Summit League Coach of the Year after guiding the Pioneers to their sixth Summit League regular season title in the last seven years. The Denver head coach earned the award for the third time in his career, also doing so in 2017 and 2019.

Davis finished the regular season 13-3 in singles matches, including a perfect 5-0 in Summit League play. By court, Davis is 3-1 on the No. 1 court, 6-1 on the No. 2 court and 4-1 on the No. 3 court. In doubles, Davis is 12-5 and 4-1 in the Summit League, playing all of his doubles matches this season with Summers.

Cuesta is 12-1 in singles play, having won each of his last eight matches, including all five in Summit League play. He has played nine matches on the No. 5 court (8-1) and four on the No. 6 court (4-0). In doubles, Cuesta is 9-4, playing all of his matches with Crespo, helping the duo to four-straight doubles victories.

Crespo is 8-1 in singles matches this year, having won his last seven. The lineup anchor is 7-0 on the No. 6 court and 1-0 on the No. 4 court this season.

Summers is 10-6 in his singles matches this season, including 8-1 on the No. 3 court.
