DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball head coach
Jeff Wulbrun announced the 2021-22 regular-season schedule on Thursday. The Pioneers are slated to play in 31 games in the regular season, with 18 coming in the Summit League.
"We're thrilled to announce the non-conference schedule for the upcoming season for the University of Denver Men's Basketball program," Wulbrun said. "I couldn't be more pleased with the eight newcomers we have added in our recruiting class and the potential of our team to compete with everyone on our schedule.
"Summer workouts have reached the halfway point for us, and I'm elated with the team's progress, development, chemistry and camaraderie in a short period of time. It speaks volumes on the talent and character of the young men in our program."
Denver brings a talented new core into the year, with its recruiting class being ranked second in the Summit League by Major Madness back on July 7.
"The schedule will be challenging as we have away games at New Mexico and Wyoming and one stretch of six road games in a row," Wulbrun said. "These road games will give us experience in playing in hostile arenas and prepare us for conference play. The trip to UTSA will give us a taste of conference tournament action as we will play three games in three days.
DU opens the season with two home contests, starting on Nov. 9 with Regis. The Crimson and Gold then host Ottawa University (Ariz.) on Nov. 12.
The Pioneers then hit the road for the first time in th season with a trip to play in a multiple-team event at the University of Texas San Antonio. DU will play in three games in three days from Nov. 15-17.
Denver returns home to host Houston Baptist on Nov. 21 before starting a six-game road trip beginning with a trip down I-25 south to take on Air Force on Nov. 24.
The Crimson and Gold continue the road trip with stops at Utah Valley (Nov. 27), regional foe Wyoming (Dec. 2), Texas State (Dec. 5) and New Mexico (Dec. 9) before concluding with a contest at Dixie State (Dec. 11) in Utah.
A game with UC San Diego (Dec. 15) in Hamilton Gymnasium closes out the non-league portion of the schedule.
In Summit League play, DU will compete in 18 games, starting with a pair of home games against Western Illinois (Dec. 20) and new league member St. Thomas (Dec. 22). Denver closes on 2021 with a game at last year's NCAA Sweet 16 participant, Oral Roberts in Tulsa on Dec. 30.
"The energy, enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding our program and the upcoming season have been exciting to see," Wulbrun said. "We look forward to playing in a great environment in Hamilton Gymnasium this year."
