DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball head coach
Jeff Wulbrun announced the signing of
Pedro Lopez-Sanvicente on Wednesday. The incoming freshman has signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) to continue his academic and athletic career with the Pioneers.
The 6-foot-8 playmaking forward from the Canary Islands, Spain will join DU after playing with his high school team, Heidelberg School in 2020. Lopez-Sanvicente was named Most Valuable Player on that team on several occasions. Lopez-Sanvicente has also played for the Spanish National Team in the FIBA play and his team took second in the Spanish Championship during his junior season in high school.
"We think we have significantly improved our roster with the addition of Pedro to our program," Wulbrun said. "At 6-foot-8, he is a versatile post player, who shoots the 3 and is a threat to not only beat you off the bounce, but change directions and speeds. He runs the floor very well and is very crafty around the basket. We think he'll have a great impact on the boards and will be able to guard multiple positions. Of equal importance, he will be a great fit for our program's culture and is an excellent student, who understands the value of a University of Denver degree."
The Spanish forward brings some playmaking abilities to the front court, with a high basketball IQ and outside shooting range and passing touch.
Lopez-Sanvicente marks the end of the signing process for Wulbrun and his staff this summer. The incoming forward joins a talented class that features eight other players in
Payton Moore,
KJ Hunt,
Michael Henn,
Coban Porter,
Jordan Johnson,
Tevin Smith,
Felipe Motta and
Touko Tainamo. The class was ranked second overall in the Summit League by blogging site Major Madness prior to Lopez signing.
Lopez-Sanvicente is the third international player to sign with the Crimson and Gold this season, joining Motta and Tainamo.
Denver has started its offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
