DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team got its season started off the on right foot with a 4-3 win at Rice on Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Doubles:
Denver clinched the all-important doubles point with wins on the first and second court. After falling on court three, the Pioneers got a 6-4 win on court two from
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and
Mattia Ros and then [32]
James Davis and
Matt Summers won the doubles point in a tiebreak, taking the doubles match 7-3 in the breaker.
Singles:
The Pioneers' singles points came on courts one, three and the clincher came on six. Davis and Summers pulled in a pair of points on the day, clinching the aforementioned doubles point before winning their singles matches 7-5, 6-3 and 6-3, 7-6 (4), respectively.
Daniel Krulig clinched the final singles point, getting off to a nail-biting start with a 7-1 win in the first set breaker. After falling in the second set breaker, Krulig raced out to a 4-0 lead in the decisive third set, ultimately taking the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
Notes:
- The win is the first of the head coaching career of Drew Eberly.
