DENVER – Senior
Brett Stapley of the Denver Pioneers hockey team has been named the National Player of the Month for December, the Hockey Commissioners' Association announced on Wednesday.
Stapley, 22, recorded nine points (5g/4a) in five games last month, highlighted by a career-high three goals and four points on Dec. 3 at Arizona State. The forward recorded three multi-points games in December and had points in four of the Pioneers' five contests—including in each of the first three—helping the team to a 4-1-0 record. Stapley registered his first career game-winning goal and added an assist this past Friday, Dec. 31, in Denver's 7-2 win versus Alaska Fairbanks.
The Campbell River, British Columbia, native is tied for second on the team in scoring with 22 points (8g/14a) in 18 games this year and has already set a new career high with eight goals. The Montreal Canadiens draft pick has recorded six goals and seven assists in the last six games, which included tying his career best with four points (1g/3a) on Saturday, Jan. 1 against UAF.
Current NHL Anaheim Ducks forward
Troy Terry was the last Denver player to earn national honors as player of the month, doing so for March/April 2018.
Carter Savoie was the last DU player to win any national award when he picked up top rookie honors in December 2020.
Stapley was nominated for the HCA national award after being named the National Collegiate Hockey Association's Player of the Month for December on Tuesday. He has twice been honored as the NCHC Forward of the Week over the last month, earning the accolade on Dec. 7 and again on Monday.
Freshman forward
Carter Mazur was the runner-up for the HCA National Rookie of the Month after posting two goals and six assists in eight games. Wisconsin freshman defenseman Corson Ceulemans won the award with seven points (2g/5a) in four contests.
UP NEXT: No. 7 Denver's next game is on Jan. 14-15 at home against No. 4 St. Cloud State after its series this weekend at Omaha was postponed and rescheduled for Feb. 4-5.
