DENVER – The Denver Pioneers hockey team ranks No. 11 in the country in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey's newest polls that were released on Monday.
DU dropped two spots after splitting its weekend series against St. Cloud State, falling 4-2 on Friday before earning a 6-0 shutout on Saturday. The Pioneers, who were previously No. 9 in the media polls, are presently ranked at No. 13 in the NPI computer rankings that determine the NCAA Tournament field.
St. Cloud State entered the polls for the first time this season at No. 20/19 following the weekend split. The Huskies also beat a top-10 opponent in Minnesota Duluth the previous weekend.
The NCHC has the most teams ranked in the country with five squads and has three in the top 10 with Western Michigan at No. 3/3, North Dakota at No. 4/4 and Minnesota Duluth at No. 7/8. The Big Ten, CCHA and Hockey East all have four teams apiece in each poll.
The top four of each ranking remained unchanged with Michigan at No. 1, Michigan State at No. 2, Western Michigan at No. 3 and North Dakota at No. 4, while Penn State moved into the top five following its sweep of Wisconsin. Michigan is the unanimous top team in the USA Hockey rankings and garnered 48-of-50 first-place votes in the USCHO.com rankings.
UP NEXT: No. 11 Denver hosts NO. 7/8 Minnesota Duluth this weekend to wrap up a four-game homestand and in the teams' only series of the season. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. MT and will be televised regionally on Altitude 2 while Saturday's start time is 6 p.m. MT. Both games will be available on NCHC.tv.
