DENVER – Freshman defenseman
Shai Buium of the University of Denver hockey team was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Buium had a goal and an assist in the Pioneers' series last weekend against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, while also adding four total shots on goal and a plus-2 rating.
The San Diego, California, native had an assist in Denver's 5-3 win on Friday before scoring on Saturday in a 3-2 loss to UMD. He added two shots on goal in each game.
Buium ranks third among Pioneer defensemen in scoring this season with 13 points, tallying two goals and 11 assists. He owns a plus-13 rating on the year while also producing 13 blocked shots.
This is Buium's first career NCHC weekly honor, and he becomes the fourth Pioneer to be named Rookie of the Week this season, joining
Jack Devine (twice),
Carter Mazur (twice) and
Massimo Rizzo.
Miami's Chase Gresock was named Forward of the Week, North Dakota's Ethan Frisch was Defenseman of the Week and UND's Zach Driscoll was Goaltender of the Week. In addition, Minnesota Duluth's Zach Stejskal was named the Honorary Goaltender of the Week after he entered Saturday's game vs. DU and made 20 saves for the win. It was his first game since being diagnosed with testicular cancer less than four months ago.

Bobby Brink was a finalist for Forward of the Week, while Buium was also up for Defenseman of the Week honors.
UP NEXT: The No. 3 Pioneers head to Western Michigan this weekend to wrap up the season series against the No. 6 Broncos. Both Friday and Saturday's game begins at 5 p.m. MT.
