Four Pioneers Finish in Top 10 in Slalom at RMISA Championships

Conference championships continue with Nordic action on Friday
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Denver placed four skiers in the top 10 on Thursday as the alpine portion of the 2022 RMISA Championships concluded with men's and women's slalom.
Junior Eleri Smart led the Pioneers at Howelsen Hill Ski Area by placing fourth in the women's event, while junior Galena Wardle produced her eighth top 10 of the season in 10th place. On the men's side, Seniors Simon Fournier and Tobias Kogler came in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Senior Tristan Lane was the third scorer for the Denver men in 15th, while sophomore Trey Seymour finished one spot behind in 16th. Sophomore Nora Brand was the third DU scorer in the women's slalom, placing in 16th.
Junior Cole Puckett finished 36th among the collegiate skiers after making a mistake on the first run, but he was able salvage the run and finish the course. Freshman Cooper Cornelius skied a first run but didn't take a second.
Two Westminster College skiers won both races, as Denise Dingsleder won the women's slalom and Francesco Gori took the men's top spot. Montana State's Kristiane Bekkestad (second) and Utah's Katie Vesterstein (third) also made the podium in the women's race, while Westminster's Mikkel Solbakken (second) and Utah's Gustav Voello (third) joined Gori on the men's stand.
Westminster's big day moved the Griffins into second place in the conference team standings and pushed the Pioneers in third, but DU is still within striking distance to take the team title heading into the Nordic portion. Denver has 288 points and is just 46 behind leader Utah (334) and can easily jump over Westminster, which doesn't field a Nordic squad.
UP NEXT: The Nordic races of the RMISA Championships begins on Friday with the men's 10K classic at 10 a.m. MT and the women's 5K classic at 11:30 a.m. at Howelsen Hill Ski Area in Steamboat Springs. The alpine squads will have another slalom competition on Friday at Howelsen Hill as they'll take part in a RMISA Alpine Qualifier event, which marks the last chance for them to qualify for next month's NCAA Championships.
