[14/16] Denver’s 13-Goal Second Half Gets Pios Back in Win Column

The Pioneers will return to the state of North Carolina next weekend to take on UNC

DENVER – The [14/16] University of Denver men's lacrosse team used a 14-1 run to pull away from Canisius in the second half on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, winning the second game of a back-to-back by a score of 20-9.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Denver had a DU Division I record 15 different goal scorers on the afternoon that combined for Denver's first 20-goal output of the season. After a slow day for Denver's attack 24 hours earlier, Denver's leading scorer JJ Sillstrop netted his fourth hat trick of the season and the seventh of his career. Freshman Noah Manning, who earned the first start of his career at attack on Sunday, also finished with a hat trick and a helper.
 
In total, 17 different players had at least a point. Alec Stathakis won 15-of-21 faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls in the win.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, Malik Sparrow had three caused turnovers and three ground balls.


 
First Quarter:
Denver got on the board first with Michael Lampert's second of the campaign. Canisius evened things up with 11:11 to go before Denver took its first two-goal lead of the half with back-to-back tallies from Ted Sullivan and Johnny Marrocco. Back-to-back goals from the Golden Griffins evened things up 3-3 with 6:36 to play in the opening quarter.
 
The Pioneers rounded out the first quarter scoring with Joshua Carlson's second of the campaign. Denver's ride forced a failure to clear violation and then Ty Badciong hit Carlson in transition to make it 4-3 through 15 minutes.
 
Second Quarter:
Canisius evened things back up on the first possession of the second quarter, but back-to-back goals from the Pioneers 1:06 apart restored Denver's two goal lead with 10:39 to play in the half. Mic Kelly's first career goal and JJ Sillstrop's first of two tallies in the half made it 6-3 with 10:39 to play in the second.
 
Canisius had a response again, scoring back-to-back goals 1:52 apart to even things up at 3:40 on the clock. Off the ensuring faceoff, Stathakis won it to Casey Wilson, who fed Manning, who hit Sillstrop in-stride on the crease for his 15th goal of the season. Manning, who made his first career start, earned his first career assist on the play.
 
Denver took a 7-6 advantage into the locker room.
 
Third Quarter:
The Pioneers scored the first four goals of the second half to pad their lead to five. First career goals from Casey Wilson and Ryan Giles got the scoring started, followed by Sillstrop's hat trick goal and a goal from Riley Curtis that padded the lead to 11-6 with 9:34 to go in the quarter.
 
Following a Canisius timeout after the Curtis tally, Denver got two more goals in the run from Simmons on the man-up and Manning's first career marker to extend the lead to 13-6 with 5:58 to go.
 
Manning got his second a few minutes later and then Stathakis scored seven seconds after that to make it a 9-0 run for the Pios, and give Denver its first eight-goal quarter of the season.
 
Canisius got one back with 21 seconds to go to round out the third quarter scoring and send Denver into the final 15 minutes with a 15-7 lead.

Fourth Quarter:
Denver got the first five out of the gate in the fourth quarter. A first goal of the season from Sam Dwinell, preceded Manning's hat trick goal to make it 17-7. Richie Connell got a goal on the man-up and Brett Boos tallied Denver's second faceoff goal of the afternoon to round out Denver's scoring with 8:17 to play.
 
Notes
  • Jack Hannah extended his team leading point streak to 20 games (42-13-55)
  • Denver's 15 goal scorers is a Division I program record (previous high was 14 in wins over St. John's in April, 2021 and Cleveland State in February, 2017.
  • Denver's 14-1 second-half run was Denver's 24th 10-1 run or better in 13 seasons under head coach Bill Tierney.
