DENVER – The No. 7-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team returned home after a three-meet road trip, topping New Hampshire 196.125-193.625 on Sunday.
COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart: "It was good to be back at home, and we're so thankful for the support of all of our fans. We'll keep making adjustments and get stronger and stronger from here on out.
"I love the character of this team and how supportive and encouraging they are to each other."
SIGNIFICANT STATS
- Sophomore Jessica Hutchinson made her 2022 all-around debut, winning the title and missing her career high by just .050. In her first beam routine of the season, she set a new personal best (9.900).
- Graduate student Mia Sundstrom captured the first vault title of her career with a season-best 9.875.
- Graduate student Emily Glynn won her second bars title of the year, and Hutchinson won on beam and floor to complete the title sweep for DU.
- Denver shifted its lineups following graduate student Lynnzee Brown's season-ending injury. DU was also without sophomore Abbie Thompson, who is expected to miss multiple weeks with an injury.
- As part of the team's lineup adjustments, DU saw three student-athletes compete in exhibition this week: sophomore Rosie Casali on bars, junior Callie Schlottman on beam and junior Emma Brown on floor.
VAULT RECAP
Denver opened the meet with a 49.100 on vault, led by Sundstrom's meet-high 9.875 that was only .025 from her career high. Hutchinson and sophomore
Rylie Mundell shared second place with their matching 9.825s. Senior
Alexandria Ruiz was just behind them with a 9.800 while freshman
Momoko Iwai scored a 9.775, an improvement over her first vault for DU on January 15.
BARS RECAP
For the second time in three weeks, Glynn helped lead Denver's bars lineup with a 9.900. Mundell added a 9.850 while Ruiz and Hutchinson tied for third overall with 9.800s. Sundstrom returned to the lineup with a 9.775 to give DU a 49.125.
BEAM RECAP
DU began to test its depth on beam, shuffling the lineup and adding some new faces. Freshman Iwai took over the leadoff position for the second meet in a row, and
Emma Brown made her second appearance of the year. Ruiz's season-high 9.875 got the rotation back on track following a fall, and Hutchinson made her season debut on the event with her personal-best 9.900. Sophomores
Bella Mabanta and Mundell showed grit in fighting through minor stumbles to keep DU from counting the fall.
FLOOR RECAP
Denver capped the meet on a high note with Hutchinson's 9.925 in her first floor appearance of the year, just missing her career high by .025. Mabanta, too, was only .025 off her personal best with a 9.850 to place second. Ruiz added a 9.800, which Glynn also earned after anchoring the lineup. Iwai started the rotation for the third meet in a row, scoring a 9.750 for DU's final counted score.
