RENO, Nev. – The [64] University of Denver men's tennis team (8-6) dropped the doubles point but won four of six singles matches to take a 4-3 win over Nevada (12-6) on Monday afternoon at the McArthur Tennis Center. Monday's match was originally scheduled for Sunday but was pushed back due to weather in the area.
Denver has played in five 4-3 matches this year (3-2).
Doubles:
Denver's top doubles duo of
James Davis and
Matt Summers improved to 8-3 together this season with a 6-1 victory on court one, but the Pioneers dropped matches on the other two courts to give Nevada the early 1-0 lead.
Singles:
Four of the six singles matches went the distance on Monday afternoon. The only match that didn't that went in Denver's favor saw Davis earn a straight-set win on the top court, winning 7-5, 6-4 to cut a 2-0 Nevada lead in half with four matches to play. Davis improved to 7-4 in singles play this season.
Daniel Krulig got Denver's second point of the day to even the score, winning his match on court six by a count of 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Krulig is now 4-5 in singles action this season.
Nevada won a third-set breaker on court four to regain the lead at 3-2, but Summers answered with his three-set win at 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to knot things up at three with just court two left to go. Summers was the first to double digit singles wins this season at 10-4.
With his pair of wins today, Summers is now even with Henry Craig for second in program history with 164 combined singles and doubles victories.
Nico Herrero-Cuesta was just minutes behind Summers getting to double digits, winning his match on court two 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 to improve to 10-3 and clinch the match for the Pioneers.
UP NEXT: Denver will be back in action in Vegas on Thursday when the Pioneers head to UNLV for a 4 p.m. MT first serve.
