Pioneers Head to Utah for 2022 NCAA National Championships

PARK CITY/MIDWAY, Utah – The University of Denver ski team goes for its 25th national title this week as the Pioneers take part in the 2022 NCAA Championships at Park City Mountain Resort and Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Utah.
The four-day competition begins with alpine giant slalom racing on Wednesday before the women's 5-kilometer and men's 10K Nordic classical races on Thursday. The alpine events conclude at Park City on Friday with men's and women's slalom, and a national champion will be crowned on Saturday with the women's 15K and men's 20K Nordic freestyle events at Soldier Hollow.
DU finished third at last year's national championships in New Hampshire and is coming off a second-place team finish at the 2022 RMISA Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The University of Utah is hosting this year's event and is also the two-time defending national champions.
Each school at the NCAA national championships can only field a maximum squad of 12 qualified skiers, three men and three women in both alpine and Nordic. The Pioneers were one of five teams that qualified a full squad for the races in Utah based on each individual's results during the 2022 season.
Denver's strength this year is in men's Nordic, which finished as RMISA champions in the discipline. The Pios have NCAA returners Bernhard Flaschberger and Ole Marius Kirkeng, as well as newcomer Andreas Kirkeng, who recorded two wins and four podiums as a freshman. Flaschberger recorded a career-best four victories this season and senior Ole Marius Kirkeng had his best collegiate campaign with five top-10 results and his first career podium (second in the 5K Classic at the Alaska Fairbanks Invitational on Feb. 1).
DU's women's Nordic squad features three returners from last year's race in juniors Emma Larsson and Vera Norli and sophomore Hanna Ray. Larsson and Norli both posted a pair of top-10 finishes this year, while Ray had a career-best eighth-place result in the 5K classic at the RMISA Championships.
In women's alpine, senior and U.S. Olympian for the Beijing Winter Games Katie Hensien is set to compete at her first NCAA Championships. She will be joined by junior returner Eleri Smart and junior Galena Wardle, who will also be making her debut at nationals. Hensien posted top-five results in all five of the races she finished this year, including winning a pair of giant slalom events and coming in second in two slalom competitions. Smart recorded four top-five results and Wardle had a breakout campaign with eight top-10 placements in the 10 races she finished—four each in both slalom and GS.
The men's alpine group features 2020 national champion Tobias Kogler, who has two wins, four podiums and five top-five finishes in his last five giant slalom races. Kogler won the RMISA Championship in the discipline and looks to add to his NCAA trophy collection that also features a silver in the 2021 GS and a bronze in the 2018 slalom. He'll be joined by fellow senior Simon Fournier and freshman Cooper Cornelius. Fournier has four top-10 finishes in his last four slalom events, while Cornelius placed in the top 10 in all six giant slalom races this year, including coming in second in his collegiate debut at the Montana State Invitational on Jan. 18.

The Pioneers have won the most skiing national championships in the country and are looking to get back on the podium as a team for the first time since 2018.
