DENVER – The [17/17] University of Denver men's lacrosse team fell to [3/3] Georgetown 17-9 on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Inside the Box Score:
JJ Sillstrop had a first quarter hat trick and
Richie Connell found the back of the net twice to lead the Pioneers.
Jack Thompson made 17 saves, including 13 in the middle quarters.
Georgetown outshot Denver 58-36, and won the ground ball battle 33-23.
First Quarter:
The two teams combined to score on their first three possessions, giving the Hoyas a 2-1 lead with 11:39 to go in the opening quarter.
Sillstrop scored his first of three in the opening quarter, sandwiched around a pair of Hoyas goal.
Johnny Marrocco converted a feed inside from
Michael Lampert, and back-to-back goals 40 seconds apart from Sillstrop to cap his hat trick gave Denver a 4-2 lead with 5:51 to play in the first.
Georgetown converted on the man-up to cut the margin to one heading into the second quarter.
Second Quarter:
Georgetown got the first four goals of the second quarter to make it a 5-0 run in a 15:03 span to take a 7-4 lead with 2:28 to play.
Connell put an end to the run on the man-up, converting a feed from
Alex Simmons for his ninth goal of the year.
Georgetown had a 27-15 shot advantage in the opening 30 minutes with Thompson making nine saves in the first half.
Third Quarter:
Georgetown opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run in the first 10:10 to pull out to a 13-5 advantage, making it an 11-1 run dating back to the middle of the first quarter.
Ted Sullivan stopped the run with 4:11 to go to cut the margin to seven heading into the final 15 minutes. Sullivan's goal was his 17
th of the season.
Fourth Quarter:
The Hoyas outscored the Pioneers 4-3 in the final 15 minutes to stretch the final score to 17-9. Simmons,
Riley Curtis and Connell all scored for the Pioneers.
