[RV/RV] Denver Earns 12-10 Win at [18/18] Villanova

Jack Thompson made 15 saves and Jack Hannah had a hat trick to send the Pioneers to 6-5 on the year

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The [RV/RV] University of Denver men's lacrosse team scored four of the first five goals out of halftime to turn a goal deficit into a 10-8 lead at the end of the third quarter, guiding the Pioneers to their sixth win of the season by a count of 12-10 at [18/18] Villanova on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Jack Hannah led the Pioneers with a hatty on 3-of-5 shooting, one of 10 different goal scorers for Denver on Saturday afternoon. Denver has had 10 different goal scorers 24 times since associate head coach Matt Brown became the offensive coordinator in 2008.
 
Goalie Jack Thompson made 15 saves, including 10 in the first half to keep the Pioneers in the game early, en-route to the 19th win of his career.
 
First Quarter:
Denver and Villanova alternated the first nine goals of the game, including the only seven goals of the first quarter that saw the Pioneers carry a 4-3 lead into the second 15 minutes of play.
 
Ted Sullivan went on a long dodge and buried one from the right alley, Hannah got his first of the day, Simmons opened his afternoon off a feed from JJ Sillstrop and then Hannah's second gave Denver the 4-3 advantage.
 
Second Quarter:
Michael Lampert canceled out Villanova's opening goal of the second quarter to give Denver a 5-4 lead, and then Richie Connell gave Denver back-to-back goals for the first time on Saturday to make it a two-goal advantage.
 
Villanova responded with three-straight, including two from Matt Campbell to take a 7-6 lead with 6:07 to play, an advantage they carried into the halftime locker room.
 
Third Quarter:
Sillstrop converted on the man-up on a feed from Simmons to get the scoring started in the second half. Johnny Marrocco followed with a goal with 9:50 to play in the frame to give Denver the lead back at 8-7.
 
Brett Baskin tied it up for Villanova, but a Noah Manning rebound goal off an Simmons' saved shot made it 9-8 Denver and Ellis Geis got top-side and finished from the middle of the field for his first goal of the season to make it 10-8 Pios.
 
Fourth Quarter:
Hannah's hat trick goal came on the man-up to cancel out Campbell's fourth of the day and make it 11-9 with 7:08 to play in regulation.
 
Villanova was able to get back to within one with 70 seconds to go, but an Alec Stathakis goal off the faceoff restored the two-goal advantage to send the Pioneers back above .500 on the season.

What's Next
The University of Denver men's lacrosse team, Presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, will hit return home next weekend for Senior Saturday when the Pioneers welcome St. John's to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on Altitude TV and ESPN Denver 1600.
