Bruner Signs With Denver

Point guard from Jacksonville ready to make impact in 2022-23

DENVER  - University of Denver Men's Basketball head coach Jeff Wulbrun announced the addition of Tommy Bruner on Thursday. Bruner has signed his athletic grant and aid to continue his academic and athletic career for the Pioneers.

The incoming guard completes Wulbrun's recruiting class that features size, length, skill and athleticism, joining Justin Mullins, Marko Lukic, Lukas Kisunas, Dan Mukuna, Tyree Corbett and Yarin Hasson.

"Tommy is the experienced floor leader we were seeking to run and lead our team this year," Wulbrun said. "He is highly competitive and comes from a high-achieving academic and basketball family. He is a proven college player who has led his team in scoring and assists.

"He is one of the most efficient guards in college basketball at using ball screens and we will rely on him to push the ball in transition to create easy opportunities for his teammates. Tommy is the final piece of our recruiting class that I believe will allow us to contend for a league championship this season."

Bruner brings a veteran presence to the backcourt for the Pioneers this upcoming season. The 6-foot-1 guard out of Columbia, S.C. spent last season at Jacksonville, appearing in 13 games. He averaged 20.1 minutes per contest and averaged 8.8 points per game and 1.8 assists off the bench. Bruner recorded six games in double figures, including his best game of the year late, posting season highs in points (23), rebounds (5) and assists (5) against Carver on Dec. 29. The incoming guard had his season cut short due to injury after that.

Prior to playing for the Dolphins, Bruner spent two seasons at USC Upstate. While there, he appeared in 54 games, starting in 49. He led the team in scoring (13.6) and assists (85) as a sophomore in 2020-21 and earned All-Big South Honorable Mention honors. The playmaking guard set the USC Upstate freshman scoring record in the 2019-20 season, passing former Denver Nugget Torrey Craig with 461 points scored and was a Big South All-Freshman Team member and two-time Big South Freshman of the Week.

Denver will return to the hardwood in the summer to begin training for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
