Lauren Black Wins Gold with Canada at The World Games 2022

Big East women’s lacrosse Freshman of Year registered eight points in five games

DENVER – University of Denver women's lacrosse attacker Lauren Black helped Team Canada win the gold medal at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Black recorded four goals and four assists in five games for the Canadians, who defeated the United States 14-12 in the championship game on Saturday, July 16. She also tied for the team lead with seven ground balls.

The New Westminster, British Columbia, native scored and had a helper in the final versus the U.S., including recording an assist to knot the game at 11-11 in the fourth quarter. This was the first time Black had represented Canada on the international stage.

Instead of playing the usual 12-women game, lacrosse at The World Games were contested on a smaller field (70-by-36 meters) at 6-on-6 and featured eight-minute quarters. The World Games 2022 were held from July 7-17, with lacrosse played at PNC Field on the campus of University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The World Games is held every four years, in the year following the Summer Olympics and features 30-plus, multi-disciplinary sports that aren't played in the Olympics. Several former World Games sports have become full-time Olympic sports. The World Games is led by the International World Games Association (IWGA), a non-profit organization that is composed of 37 International Sports Federations and recognized by The International Olympic Committee (IOC).

During her freshman season at DU, Black set the freshman-program record with 76 points (54 goals and 20 assists) in 21 games. Her 54 goals were the second-most by a freshman in Denver history and the most by a Big East player since the conference's realignment in 2014. The attacker finished fifth nationally among first-year players in both goals and points.

A unanimous selection to the All-Big East First Team, Black was named the conference Freshman of the Year and earned IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region Second-Team honors.
