Denver Opens 2022 Season in South Dakota at The Southern Hills Triathlon

All nine DU triathletes will be racing
HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – The University of Denver women's triathlon team opens its 2022 season on Saturday at The Southern Hills Triathlon at the Angostura Recreation Area in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The collegiate wave is set to begin at 7:50 a.m. MDT.

This is the Pioneers' first race since the 2021-22 spring season when they took part in the Clermont Draft-Legal Challenge in Clermont, Florida, on March 5-6. Denver's previous team-scored race was the Collegiate National Championships last November when the squad finished fourth.

Saturday's race include a slightly-shorter sprint distance, with the competitors taking part in a 400-meter swim (quarter of a mile) and a 19.3-kilmoter bike ride (12 miles). Most collegiate races feature a 750-meter swim and a 20K bike portion. The athletes will wrap up the triathlon with the usual 5K run.

Following the out-and-back swim from Breakers Beach at Angostura Reservoir, the triathletes will head out on their bikes toward the town of Oral before turning around and heading back to the state park. The run is another out and back, heading south along the eastern edge of the lake.

The Pioneers will be taking all nine of their student-athletes to the race: graduate student Melissa Funes, senior Stormy Hegg, sophomores Olivia Ebenstein, Avarie Faulkner, Freya McKinley and Clara Normand, and freshmen Coco Diemar, Elizabeth Harita and Nadiya Linde-Elmhirst.

For Funes, Diemar, Harita and Linde-Elmhirst, the race will mark the first of their collegiate careers, while Normand will be making her Denver debut after competing for Wagner College last season.

The other collegiate teams competing this weekend are Black Hills State, Colorado Mesa and Montana State Billings. The top five finishers from each squad will score points for their team.
