DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team will begin its 2023 season at (RV) Southern Methodist on Saturday, January 14, at 12 p.m. CT/11 a.m. MT.
Season Preview:
Denver enters the 2023 season at the Summit League preseason favorite following the head coaches' vote. DU edged out Drake with 23 total points including three first-place votes.
DU returns three 2022 All-Summit League Team members including junior
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta, who was named the 2023 Summit League Men's Tennis Players to Watch List.
DU also welcomes five newcomers to the roster including transfer students
Mitch Johnson (San Francisco),
Conner Olsen (Arizona),
Daniel Sancho Arbizu (Lamar) and
Anish Sriniketh (Texas A&M). Freshman
Raffaello Papajcik also joins the team.
Head coach
Drew Eberly is in his second season with the Pioneers and is joined by new assistant coach
Will Davies.
Last Time Out:
Denver concluded its 2022 season with a tight 4-3 loss to Drake in the Summit League Championship. Then-graduate student
James Davis represented Denver at the NCAA National Championships but fell 7-6(4) 6-4 in the first round of singles to Georgia's Philip Henning.
During its 2022 fall season, Denver played in five tournaments including hosting the Denver Hidden Duals on October 28-30, and finished with a Summit League preview at the Drake Hidden Duals on November 11-13.
Series History:
Denver and Southern Methodist have only met once previously more than 15 years ago. DU made the trip to SMU on February 26, 2006, with the Mustangs taking the match 7-0.

DU returns to Denver for its first two home matches of the season, starting with hosting UC Davis on Friday, January 20, at 12 p.m. MT, followed by Rice on Sunday, January 22, at 10:30 a.m. MT. Both matches will be played at Denver Tennis Park.
