Alpine Pioneers Set for Westminster and MSU Invitationals

Denver skiing begins alpine portion of the 2023 campaign
SNOWBIRD, Utah/BOZEMAN, Mont. – The alpine squad of the University of Denver ski team gets its collegiate season underway this week as the Pioneers compete at the Westminster Invitational and wrap up the Montana State Invitational.
Denver opens the four days of events on Thursday and Friday at the alpine-only Westminster Invitational at Snowbird Resort in Utah. DU and the rest of the RMISA squads then travel to Bozeman for the conclusion of the MSU Invite, which began on Jan. 13-14 with Nordic races.
The Westminster Invite features only slalom events, with the women taking part in two races on Thursday before the men compete in their two races on Friday. The start times are 9 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. MT for the two races.
The schools will conduct a pair of giant slalom events on Tuesday, Jan. 31 and Wednesday, Feb. 1 when the circuit moves to Bridger Bowl Ski Area. The men and women are presently scheduled to race each day of the meet. (NEW: Each GS race was pushed back a day to accommodate extreme cold conditions forecasted for Monday.)
DU is presently in fifth place in the Montana State Invite after 15-kilometer classical and the women's 5K and men's 10K freestyle. The Pioneers have 241 points but only trail second-place Alaska Anchorage by 35 points. Utah is in the lead with 396 points following four-of-eight events of the meet.
Denver's alpine squad is returning seven athletes, including 2022 All-Americans Simon Fournier (first team slalom) and Galena Wardle (second-team giant slalom). Fournier won't be competing this week as he is currently with Canada on the FIS Alpine World Cup circuit.
The Pioneers' alpine roster includes a six-member freshmen class in Jack Bowers, Thomas Hoffman, Mia Hunt, Adrian Minde Hunshammer, Sara Rask and Josephine Trueblood. Hunt and Rask returned to the squad over the weekend after competing for the United States and Sweden, respectively, at the 2023 Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, New York.
