DENVER – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Monday that sophomore
Massimo Rizzo of the University of Denver hockey team has been named the NCHC Forward of the Week.
Rizzo combined for three points (two goals, one assist) last weekend against Alaska Fairbanks, scoring in both contests and extending his career-long point streak to nine games (six goals, five assists). Rizzo and defenseman
Mike Benning's current nine-game runs are the longest by a Pioneer since
Bobby Brink had points in 14 straight outings from Dec. 31, 2021 to Feb. 19, 2022 (seven goals, 21 assists).
After scoring Denver's lone marker in a 3-1 loss on Friday to Alaska, Rizzo produced a goal and an assist on Saturday in the Pioneers' 7-2 win over the Nanooks. It was his seventh multi-point outing of the season and his second in the last three contests. Rizzo also won seven faceoffs on Friday and nine draws on Saturday.
The Burnaby, British Columbia, native leads Denver in scoring with 29 points this season and is also first on the team with 19 assists. Nationally, Rizzo ranks fifth in points and is tied for fourth in assists.
This is Rizzo's second career weekly award and first NCHC Forward of the Week honor. He was recognized as the conference's Rookie of the Week on Oct. 11, 2021. Overall, this is DU's eighth NCHC weekly award and third Forward of the Week accolade, as
Carter Mazur also won on Oct. 31 and
Jared Wright was honored on Nov. 14.
UP NEXT: Denver resumes conference play this weekend as the No. 4 Pioneers host the Miami RedHawks on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and Saturday at 6 p.m. MT at Magness Arena.
