DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team ranks No. 4 in the country in the USCHO.com poll and No. 3 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll after the latest national rankings were released on Monday.
DU's run of six straight weeks at No. 1 in the USCHO.com ranking comes to end, but the team still earned three first-place votes and 901 points. Quinnipiac is the new top team in both polls, earning 983 points and 40 first-place tallies in USCHO.com. Minnesota is second and NCHC-foe St. Cloud State is third
The Pioneers are No. 3 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, earning 603 points and two-first place nods. Minnesota is second behind Quinnipiac with 632 points. St. Cloud State is fifth.
In the Pairwise computer rankings that determine the field for the national tournament, Denver presently ranks fifth overall. Minnesota is first, Quinnipiac is second, St. Cloud State is third and Penn State is fourth.
DU split last weekend's games versus Alaska Fairbanks, falling 3-1 on Friday and winning 7-2 on Saturday. The team returns to NCHC play this Friday as it begins a two-game set against the Miami RedHawks at Magness Arena.
Western Michigan is the only other NCHC squad this is ranked, as the Broncos rank No. 12 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 13 in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. North Dakota, Omaha, Colorado College and Minnesota Duluth are also receiving votes in at least one of the polls.
About the USCHO.com Poll: The rankings are compiled weekly and consists of 50 voters, including coaches and media professionals from across the country.
About the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll: The rankings are conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
