SAN DIEGO – The University of Denver men's basketball program will open up its 2023-24 season on Monday night when the Pioneers travel to UC San Diego. Opening tip on ESPN+ and 104.3 The Fan HD3 from the LionTree Arena is set for 8:30 p.m. MT.
SERIES HISTORY:
Denver won the only previous meeting between the two programs, a 64-56 decision inside Hamilton Gymnasium in December of 2021. Touko Tainamo had 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in the home win.
SEASON OPENERS:
Denver has won each of its last three season openers, all three in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers defeated Idaho in the 2022 season opener by a score of 68-63. Denver is 11-14 in its Division I history in season openers, but 0-8 in true road games in the season openers in the DI era. Denver's last win in a season opener in a true road game came at New Mexico Highlands (83-76) in 1987.
THE SUMMER OF TOUKO:
Touko Tainamo represented Finland in the 2023 FISU World University Games in China over the summer. Tainamo made five appearances, averaging 10.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while adding three steals, three blocks and three assists to his cumulative stat line.
