DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball program will close out its back-to-back road games against nationally ranked opponents on Wednesday night when the Pioneers head to [17/18] BYU for a midweek affair at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and 104.3 The Fan HD3.
SERIES HISTORY:
BYU has a 2-0 lead in the series in Denver's modern Division I era, and has a 52-18 in an overall series that dates back to 1933. The two programs played a home-and-home in 1998 and 1999.
DENVER AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
Denver is 13-53 in its history against Division I ranked opponents, including 3-33 in true road games. The Pioneers and BYU have met three previous times while BYU has been ranked, and the Cougars have won all three. DU's last win against a ranked opponent came on February 15, 1971 against No. 19 Utah State (96-74). The Pioneers last road win against a ranked opponent came earlier in that same season, on January 30, 1971, at Oregon (93-83). Denver is 1-31 in its modern Division I history against power five programs with the lone victory coming on December 13, 2000 against Oregon State.
BRUNER LEADING DENVER IN NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Two-time Summit League Peak Performer of the Week and Summit League Male Athlete of the Month (November) entered the week third in the country in points per game (24.0), while also ranking fourth in free-throws made (67), 17th in field goals made (71), 21st in three-point field goal percentage (46.3) and 25th in three-pointers made per game (3.1).
Jaxon Brenchley, who is one of two Pioneers returning to his home state this week (Tyson Garff), is 11th in the country in assist/turnover ratio (4.12).
As a team, the Pioneers enter the week eighth in the country in free-throw makes, seventh in turnovers per game (9.3) and 39th in scoring offense (83.2).
DOUBLE DIGIT WORKLOAD:
Tommy Bruner leads the Pioneers with 82 career games in double figures, including 12-straight contests spanning back to the end of last season. Touko Tainamo is the next closest Pioneer with 37 games in double figures, including in eight of the nine games for Denver this season.
