Buium Brothers Pick Up NCHC Player of the Week Awards

Shai Buium named Defenseman of the Week, Zeev Buium recognized as Rookie of the Week

DENVER – The Buium brothers of the University of Denver hockey team picked up a pair of National Collegiate Hockey Conference weekly awards on Monday as junior Shai Buium was named Defenseman of the Week and freshman Zeev Buium was selected as Rookie of the Week.

Denver split its top-three series against North Dakota last weekend, as the then-No. 3 Pioneers lost 7-5 on Friday before earning a 3-2 victory on Saturday against the then-No. 2 Fighting Hawks.

Shai Buium tied a career high on Friday with three points, registering a goal and two assists. He also added three blocked shots, tying a personal best for a single game. The defenseman from San Diego, California, has four goals and nine assists while playing in 15-of-16 games this season, including picking up 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in the past 11 contests.

Zeev Buium recorded an assist on Friday before scoring the game-tying goal with 8:55 remaining in third period and having an assist in overtime on the game-winner on Saturday. The Southern California defenseman has 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) in 16 games this season, leading all rookie rear guards in the NCAA and ranking fifth among all freshmen.

Zeev has points in each of the last 10 games, the longest point streak by a Pioneer since Carter Mazur's 10-game run late last season from Feb. 10-March 11, 2023. It is also one of the longest streaks by a rookie defenseman in college hockey history, as Boston University's Lane Hutson's 11-game stretch last season from Dec. 11, 2022-Feb. 6, 2023 is the only one longer in the last 21 years.

This is Shai's second career NCHC Weekly award and his first Defenseman of the Week accolade as he was named Rookie of the Week on Feb. 14, 2022. Zeev picks up hardware for the second consecutive Monday as he was named Defenseman of the Week on Nov. 27. Overall, this is DU's 11th and 12th weekly accolade of the campaign, with Shai being the third winner for top D-man and Zeev picking up the squad's fifth outstanding rookie award.

North Dakota's Cameron Berg was named the NCHC Forward of the Week while Omaha's Simon Latkoczy was selected as Goaltender of the Week. DU junior Carter King was a finalist for Forward of the Week.

UP NEXT: No. 4 Denver heads to Western Michigan to play the No. 13 Broncos next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-9 before going on a three-week holiday break. DU's next game at home is an exhibition against Minot State on Dec. 30.
