DU Men’s Tennis Comes Up Short at Wichita State

Denver narrowly falls 4-3 on the road

WICHITA, Kansas – The University of Denver men's tennis team (2-4) dropped a narrow 4-3 match at Wichita State on Sunday.

Doubles:
DU once again mixed up its doubles lineup, welcoming freshman Raffaello Papajcik for the second match in a row for a No. 3 doubles team up with junior Peter Sallay. The team kept on serve until the eighth game of the set before giving up the break to WSU's Bracks/King.

In No. 2 doubles, junior Charlie Miller and redshirt senior Anish Sriniketh teamed up for the first time as well. Denver's No. 1 doubles team of junior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and sophomore Daniel Sancho Arbizu remained together but did not finish their match after Wichita State had clinched the doubles point.

Singles:
Denver flip-flopped its top two singles positions, moving Herrero Cuesta to No. 2 where he won in straight sets over WSU's Misha Kvantaliani. The players traded breaks midway through the first set before Herrero Cuesta broke up 6-5 to take the set. The second set stayed on serve until a tiebreak, which Herrero Cuesta dropped just a single point on his way to a win.

Sancho Arbizu played in No. 1 singles for the first time in his DU career and earned an upset-win over No. 97-ranked Kristof Minarik. After dropping the first set in a close tiebreak, Sancho Arbizu won five consecutive games to win the set, 6-1, and had a three-break lead in the third set when Minarik retired.

Freshman Papajcik was moved into the No. 6 singles spot at the last minute to make his collegiate singles debut and captured a three-set win. After splitting the first two sets, he broke midway through the third set to go up 4-1 and eventually close it out.

Miller was moved to No. 5 singles just prior to the start of the match but fell in straight sets, as did Sallay and graduate student Conner Olsen.
