Denver Sweeps Summit League Tennis Weekly Awards

Taylor Melville, Daniel Sancho Arbizu win Peak Performer of the Week honors
DENVER – University of Denver tennis players fifth-year student Taylor Melville and sophomore Daniel Sancho Arbizu were named the TicketSmarter Summit League Tennis Peak Performers of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
The No. 73-ranked Melville won her fourth singles match of the season in a straight-sets victory in No. 1 singles over Utah's Katya Townsend on the road on February 10. After trading breaks in the middle of the first set, Melville broke late for a 7-5 win before keeping the second set on serve and winning 12-10 in a tiebreak.
The Duluth, Georgia, native added her second doubles win of the year with teammate, freshman Claudia Martinez de Velasco on Court 2 breaking Utah's Horwood/Townsend twice en route to a 6-3 win.
This is the second Summit League weekly award of the season for Melville and the sixth of her career.
Sancho Aribzu upset No. 97-ranked Kristof Minarik from Wichita State on February 12 after being elevated to No. 1 singles for the first time in his DU career. The Denver sophomore dropped the first set in tiebreak but won five straight games to take the second set, 6-1. He had a three-break lead in the third set when Minarik retired at 5-1 to give the win to Sancho Arbizu.
This is the first Summit League weekly award of Sancho Arbizu's career.
The Denver women have now won Summit League Peak Performer of the Week honors in four consecutive weeks while Sancho Arbizu's win represents the first for the Denver men's team this season.
DU last swept the weekly Summit League tennis awards on March 8, 2022, when then-junior Britt Pursell and then-sophomore Nicolas Herrero Cuesta combined for the league's awards.
Both Denver tennis teams return home this weekend, beginning with the men hosting two matches against Metropolitan State and Utah State on Friday, February 17. DU then hosts a men's/women's double header on Sunday, February 19, which starts with the men against Idaho at 10:30 a.m. MT, which will be followed by the women versus Brown at approximately 2 p.m. MT.
