No. 10 DU Gymnastics Visits Air Force for Friday Night Tri Meet

Denver joins UC Davis at USAFA for first away meet in four weeks

WHO: No. 10 Denver at Air Force with UC Davis
WHAT: DU's first road meet since January 21
WHERE: Cadet West Gym (U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado)
WHEN: Friday, February 17, at 6 p.m. MT

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver wrapped up a three-meet home stand with a 197.125-195.575 win over Big 12 Conference opponent West Virginia on February 12.

DU shuffled its lineups on all four events – including half of its floor lineup – while posting its second-highest vault score of the season and sweeping the event titles. Junior Rylie Mundell led the way with her second-straight all-around title and added wins on vault and beam.

EYE ON THE RANKINGS:
DU sits at No. 10 in the country in Week 6 Road to Nationals rankings. It marks the fourth year in the last five that Denver has been ranked in the top 10 every week that rankings have been determined by season average (with national rankings switching to NQS on February 20).

Denver is ranked in the top 10 on vault, bars and beam for the fourth-consecutive week and is in the top 20 on all four events. Junior Jessica Hutchinson continues to be ranked on beam and floor as she has for the entire 2023 season thus far while graduate student Lynnzee Brown entered the all-around rankings after her debut on February 12.

QUICK HITS:
  • Sophomore Momoko Iwai was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week after returning to the beam and floor lineups, placing in the top three on both events and narrowly missing her career high on floor by just .025.
  • Mundell and junior Bella Mabanta tied their personal bests on vault of 9.950 and 9.900, respectively, against West Virginia. Both now have multiple scores of 9.900+ on the event this year.
  • Brown made her highly-anticipated floor debut after being a last minute-substitution on February 12. It was her first floor lineup appearance since a January 2022 season-ending injury.
  • So far in 2023, 12 of DU's 15 student-athletes have competed at least once. Including exhibitions, all but one Denver gymnast have made lineup appearances this season.
  • Friday is Denver's fourth-straight meet held in the state of Colorado after competing at home for the last three weeks.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS:
Air Force is coming off a 193.275 at San Jose State on February 10, scoring season highs on vault (49.625) and bars (48.575). Velandra Brochi placed second in the all-around with her highest score of the season (38.950).

This is the second of three meetings between DU and AFA this season after the Falcons traveled to Denver on February 5 (a 197.500-192.475 win for DU). The teams will both compete at Nebraska on March 11 as well.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES:
UC Davis logged the second-highest score in team history (196.750) against Sacramento State at home on February 12. In each of their last two meets, the Aggies have scored a program-record 49.525 on floor.

This will be just the sixth all-time meeting between DU and UCD, and the teams have not met since January 22, 2005, in a 195.275-187.475 win for DU in Denver.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Denver concludes February with its third Big 12 Conference meet when it travels to Iowa State on Friday, February 24.
