DU Sweeps Summit League Tennis Awards for Second Straight Week

Herrero Cuesta, Martinez de Velasco win Peak Performer of the Week honors

DENVER – University of Denver tennis players junior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and freshman Claudia Martinez de Velasco were named the TicketSmarter Summit League Tennis Peak Performers of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

Herrero Cuesta went undefeated across six total matches over the weekend for Denver, claiming three wins each in singles and doubles. He began the weekend with straight-sets wins in No. 2 singles over Metropolitan State's Juho Kantola (6-1 6-2) and Utah State's Bodin Zarkovic (6-3 6-3) on Friday. On Sunday against Idaho's Francisco Bascon, he returned to No. 1 singles and rallied from early breaks down in the first and third sets to win the match, 7-5 4-6 6-4.

In No. 2 doubles with teammate, redshirt senior Anish Sriniketh, he added wins of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3 across the three matches.

This is the third Summit League weekly award of Herrero Cuesta's career and the second of the season for the DU men's team after sophomore Daniel Sancho Arbizu claimed the award for Week 5.

Martinez de Velasco earned a hard-fought victory over Brown's Addison Ahlstrom on Sunday in No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set, the players traded early breaks in the second before Martinez de Velasco broke to stay in the set down 3-5. She added a second break and served it out at 7-5 to force a third set, breaking early in the set and claiming five straight games to win it, 6-1.

In No. 2 doubles, she was also leading 5-3 with teammate, fifth-year student Taylor Melville before the match was left unfinished.

This is the first Summit League weekly award of Martinez de Velasco's career.

The Denver women have now won Summit League Peak Performer of the Week honors in five consecutive weeks with four different players earning recognition: sophomore Andrea Burguete Beltran (Week 2), Melville (Weeks 3 and 5) and senior Britt Pursell (Week 4).

Denver swept the men's and women's awards for the second week in a row.

The Denver women's tennis team next hosts Montana State on Friday, February 24, while the men travel to Utah on Saturday, February 25.
