Pioneers Head to Steamboat For Colorado Invitational

DU Nordic skiing opens meet at Howelsen Hill
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Denver ski team travels to Howelsen Hill Ski Area this weekend for the start of the Spencer James Nelson Memorial Colorado Invitational. Nordic races are set for Friday and Saturday before the alpine portion commences next week.
The competition begins on Friday with the men's and women's mass start 20-kilometer classic. Saturday's events feature interval starts with the women's 5K and men's 10K freestyle.
Denver will be competing in its first Nordic races since competing in the Montana State Invitational on Jan. 13-14 in Bozeman, Montana. The Pios were just 35 points out of second place following the Nordic portion, which saw senior Bernhard Flaschberger put together a pair of top-10 results in the 15K classic and men's 10K freestyle.
Cold temperatures are expected for this weekend at Howelsen Hill, which hosted the 2022 RMISA Championships last year and will be a venue for the 2024 NCAA Championships. Races are set to begin at 9 a.m. MT on Friday and Saturday.
Last year at the conference championships, Flaschberger and now-sophomore Andreas Kirkeng earned top-10 results in both the men's 10K classic and 20K freestyle, with Kirkeng winning the classic event. In the women's 5K classic, now-junior Hanna Ray came in eighth while current-senior Vera Norli was 10th.
The alpine segment of the CU Invitational is set for next Thursday and Friday, Feb. 9-10, with a pair of giant slalom races at Eldora Mountain Resort.
