No. 39 DU Women’s Tennis Sweeps Omaha in Summit League Opener

Denver wins all nine matches on Saturday without dropping a set

DENVER – The No. 39-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (7-2) swept Omaha, 7-0, in its first Summit League match of the season on Saturday.

Denver won all three doubles matches and did not drop a set in any of the six singles matches.

Doubles:
The three doubles matches all wrapped up as identical 6-1 wins for Denver, starting with the No. 2 team of freshman Claudia Martinez de Velasco and sophomore Andrea Burguete Beltran, who broke in their first return game and then added a second break to go up 4-1.

Like Martinez de Velasco/Burguete Beltran, fifth-year student Taylor Melville and senior Britt Pursell took a quick 2-0 lead and added another for a 5-0 lead before closing it out.

The freshman duo of Louise Wikander and Caroline Driscoll broke in their first return game to set the tone before breaking again for a 3-1 lead and yet again to go up 5-1 before holding serve in the final game.

Singles:
Denver added six straight-sets singles wins to complete the sweep with all but one student-athlete losing just five or fewer games in their respective matches.

For the second time in a row, Driscoll was the first to complete her match and lost just one game in each set. She broke immediately out of the gate in both sets, going up 3-0. In the second set, she broke for a 5-0 lead and closed out the match with yet another break in the final game.

Wikander closed out her No. 4 singles match with a bagel in the second set, her fourth 6-0 set this season and her second in as many matches. The DU freshman has now lost no more than four games in each of her last four matches.

Pursell extended her singles record to a team-best 7-0 on the season after dropping just four games for the second match in a row. She started with a break in the first game of the first set and broke again late to close it out, 6-2. She added a second 6-2 set after trading breaks early before breaking in consecutive return games for a 5-2 lead before serving it out.

Melville's sixth-straight win at No. 1 singles started with her down a break in the first game before leveling things a 2-2. She then took a 5-2 lead before breaking again for take the set, 6-2. She was down in the second set as well before breaking twice for a 5-3 lead.

In No. 2 singles, Burguete Beltran broke for a 4-1 lead in the first set and added a second break to take it, 6-2. She had a 5-0 lead in the second set but was broken when trying to serve out the match, a set back which she answered with a break in the final game.

Simonov won her second collegiate singles match despite going down a break early in the first set. She broke back to even it up at 4-3 before taking a 5-3 lead and winning it, 6-4. The freshman added another 6-4 win in the second set after breaking early and holding serve for the remainder of play.
