DENVER – The University of Denver women's triathlon team has added
Alex Campbell to its roster for the upcoming 2023 regular season.
Campbell joins the Pioneers as a freshman after being named the Ontario Female Junior Triathlete of the Year in 2022.
"I'm extremely excited for Alex to join us next year. She comes from both a very strong swimming and running background," said Denver Head Coach
Barbara Perkins. "She exploded on the triathlon scene during the COVID years and has already seen a lot of success in the short period of time she's been a triathlete.
"Not only is she an outstanding athlete, but she's very driven in the classroom and has huge goals for herself in her future career. Alex fit in immediately with our team and is exactly the type of athlete I'm looking for to join us and help take us to the next level. I can't wait to see what she does at Denver and beyond."
The Kingston, Ontario, native was the top athlete for Team Ontario in the 2022 Canada Games, placing ninth in the sprint and 10th in the super sprint at the event. She also helped her province win a bronze medal in the mixed-team relay at the Canada Games.
In spring 2023, Campbell placed 23rd in the women's junior race at the Americas Triathlon Cup in Sarasota, Florida, on March 11 and placed 21st in the women's elite competition in the Americas Cup race in St. Peters, Missouri, on April 15.
"I chose the University of Denver because the combination of a welcoming school culture and strong academics," said
Campbell. "The supportive and elite training environment placed DU above and beyond other institutions. I know I will be supported in chasing my goals at the University of Denver, and I couldn't see myself anywhere else."
Campbell also competed for Canadian Cross Training Club, while running with Physi-Kult Kingston and swimming with the Kingston Sharks clubs.
She intends to major in ecology and biodiversity at DU and is interested in following a path in environmental science to help combat against growing environmental issues. Campbell received academic awards for top class averages throughout her time at Kingston Secondary School and was part of the Athletic Council which ran events, tournaments and intramurals for the high school.
