[RV/18] Denver Continues Homestand Against Grand Canyon Sunday

The Pioneers will play match two of six-straight at home to open the campaign, the only afternoon home game this season

DENVER – The [RV/18] University of Denver men's soccer team will march on with match two of its six-match homestand to open the 2023 season on Sunday when the Pioneers welcome Grand Canyon to the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT, and will be broadcast live on Summit League Network.

Last Time Out:
The Pioneers opened up the season on Thursday with a 0-0 draw against San Diego State at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Denver's defense held SDSU without a shot on goal in the 90 minutes, the 21st time DU's defense has held an opponent without a shot on goal in the program's Division I history. Thursday's scoreless draw was Denver's first in a season opener in its Division I history.

The Series:
Denver has a 2-0-0 edge in the series, outscoring the Lopes 3-1 in the previous two meetings. In the 2021 NCAA First Round, the Pioneers earned a 1-0 win in Phoenix courtesy of a Kengo Ohira goal. A year ago, also in Phoenix, Sam Bassett hit a screamer from outside the box, and Ian Smith roofed a shot in the 86th minute to send Denver past GCU 2-1.

The Franks Foundation:
Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks is 97-33-24 as a head coach at Denver, 132-50-32 in his 12 years overall with the Pioneers and 231-77-49 in his time as a player and a coach in college soccer.

Pios at Home:
Denver is 90-21-16 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium, including 80-10-10 since Franks joined the staff as an assistant in 2012 and 55-8-7 since he took over as head coach in 2015.

Up Next:
The Pioneers will play match three of six at home to start the year next Friday when Denver hosts another former NCAA Tournament foe in SMU. That kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT.
