DENVER – University of Denver men's tennis player
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta was named the TicketSmarter Summit League Peak Performer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
The DU senior won all four of his combined singles and doubles matches during Denver's first two duals of the season and played a critical role in both of DU's wins over Western Michigan (5-2) and at Purdue (4-3).
He won two doubles matches with partner, junior
Rikuto Yamaguchi with scores of 6-4 and 6-3 before turning around two more victories at No. 1 singles. On January 27 in the season opener, Herrero Cuesta forced a third set after dropping the opener and then faced three match points late in the final set, fighting off all three before getting his own break and winning it, 7-5, to clinch DU's win over WMU.
The next day, Herrero Cuesta notched his first bagel of the year and then sealed a straight-sets win with a 6-4 second set to even up the team standings against Purdue at 2-2 after DU was down 2-0 early. Denver would go on to win the match, 4-3, after being down 2-3.
This is the fifth Summit League Peak Performer of the Week award of Herrero Cuesta's career and the first for a DU men's player this season.
DU returns home to host its first duals of the year at Denver Tennis Park when it welcomes Utah on Friday, February 2, and then UTSA on Sunday, February 4.
