Pioneers Set for Seven Days of Ski Races in Colorado

Denver Skiing hosting own Invitaitonal Feb. 5-10 after competing in the CU Invite from Feb. 2-3
DENVER – University of Denver skiing returns to collegiate action this week with the start seven days of races in the state of Colorado over the first 10 days of February.
The Pioneers will host their own Denver Invitational at Loveland Ski Area and Maloit Park in the Vail Valley and will also preview the NCAA courses at the Colorado Invitational in Steamboat Springs.
The competition begins with a RMISA Alpine Qualifier in giant slalom on Thursday, Feb. 1 at Mount Werner at Steamboat Resort before the official start of the Colorado Invite the next day. The CU Invitational will be held over the course of two days, Feb. 2-3, with alpine and Nordic races each day.
Friday features another GS race at Steamboat Resort while the Nordic 7.5K freestyle interval start will take place across town at the legendary Howelsen Hill Ski Area. Saturday wraps up the Colorado Invitational with the mass start Nordic 20K classic and alpine slalom under the lights of Howelsen Hill at night.
The CU races on Friday and Saturday will serve as a tune-up for the March 6-9 NCAA Championships, which the Buffaloes are hosting will be held at the same venues and at the same distances as those this weekend.
Denver's invitational kicks off on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 5-6 with a pair of alpine slalom races at Loveland Ski Area just east of Dillon on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. There will be no spectator access from the base to the race venue at Loveland this season.
The Pioneers conclude their own meet with Nordic events on Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb. 10 at Maloit Park in Minturn, Colorado. The 10K classic mass start is set for that Friday followed by the 5K freestyle interval start on Saturday.

Denver began the season with the Westminster and Utah Invitationals earlier in January. The Pioneers placed second in both meets, including finishing just 22 points behind winner Utah in the Westminster Invite (579-557).
DU's alpine squad opened the season with four straight days of competition from Jan. 17-20, while the last Nordic races were at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center for the Utah Invitational on Jan. 12-13.
Through 18 events this season, the Pioneers ski team has produced 29 individual top-10 finishes and three victories, with junior Andreas Kirkeng winning in the Westminster 10K classic, senior Nora Brand in the Westminster slalom and freshman Liv Moritz in the Utah giant slalom.
