EAST BURKE/STRATTON MOUNTAIN, Vt. – The alpine squad of the Denver Pioneers ski team competed in its final pre-season races before the 2024 collegiate campaign gets underway later this month with four days of Nor-Am Cup events in Vermont.
Like last year, the women's races took place at Stratton Mountain Resort in southern Vermont, while the while the men were 145 miles north at the Burke Mountain Resort for their own meet.
The women continued to put together a strong pre-season performance on the Nor-Am Cup circuit, as sophomore
Sara Rask and freshman
Liv Moritz both earned three top-10 finishes in the four races. Rask won the opening giant slalom on Tuesday and finished runner-up in the GS on Saturday before wrapping up the week with a bronze in slalom on Friday. Moritz placed 10th and sixth in the opening giant slalom events and 14th and eighth in the last two slalom races.
Sophomore
Mia Hunt had a strong overall showing as well this week and placed second among juniors and sixth overall in Thursday's slalom.
The men's performances this week were a bit more scattered. Junior
Cooper Cornelius posted top-15 finishes in both giant slalom races, and freshman
Christian Soevik just missed out on the podium in fourth place in Thursday's slalom before wrapping up the week in 11th on Friday.
Three Pioneer alums were also on the mountains this week in
Eleri Smart,
Simon Fournier and
Tristan Lane. Fournier was one of the most consistent skiers in the men's field, as he picked up a pair of 10th-place results in GS before placing second and 12th in slalom.
Smart was just as consistent on the women's side as she put together two top-five showings, placing fourth in the first GS on Tuesday and fifth in slalom on Thursday. She also came in 10th in Wednesday's giant slalom and 11th on the final day of races on Friday.
