DENVER – The No. 1 Denver Pioneers hockey team returns home this weekend to host the Arizona State Sun Devils at Magness Arena for the first time as conference opponents in the NCHC.
DU will also be celebrating Military Appreciation Weekend, with Friday's start time set for at 7 p.m. MT and Saturday's game beginning at 6 p.m. MT. Both contests with be broadcast on NCHC.tv, with Saturday's game also televised regionally on Altitude 2. Limited tickets are available.
ASU is in its first season as the ninth and newest member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, but the Sun Devils and Pioneers are no strangers to one another. This will be the fourth consecutive season that Denver and Arizona State have faced off against one another and the programs have played in six series since the 2016-17 campaign.
The Pioneers own a 9-2-1 all-time record against the Sun Devils and is 7-1-0 in the past eight matchups. The teams met last year in Tempe on Nov. 10-11, 2023, with ASU winning 6-5 in overtime on Friday before DU rallied from a three-goal deficit en route to an 8-4 victory on Saturday night.
The squads will be meeting in the Mile High City for the first time since Dec. 2-3, 2022 when the Pios won 3-2 and 5-2. DU has a perfect 6-0-0 record all-time against ASU on home ice.
Denver is off to its best start to a season in program history as it has won each of its first 12 games to begin the new campaign. The Pioneers began conference play last weekend at then-No. 9 North Dakota, winning 5-2 on Friday before erasing two, one-goal deficits in a 3-2 victory on Saturday.
The Sun Devils have a 4-7-1 overall record this season and are 1-3-0 in conference play. After being swept at Colorado College on Nov. 8-9, ASU split its home set at Omaha last weekend and is coming off its first-ever NCHC victory with a 3-2 defeat of the Mavericks on Saturday.
DU will be ASU's fourth-ranked opponent this season as it has already faced No. 10 Michigan, No. 14 Providence and No. 8 CC, going 0-5-1 in those outings. The Sun Devils will be making their third trip to Colorado in the first eight weeks of the campaign, as they began the year with a series split at the Air Force Academy on Oct. 4-5.
The Pioneers are in the middle of a stretch where they are playing ranked opponents in four of their next five series through the start of the New Year. Arizona State is the only squad in that group that isn't ranked, but the team from the desert is receiving votes in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey/The Rink Live National Polls.
In addition to its season-opening, 12-game winning streak, Denver has won 21 straight contests dating back to March 9 at Colorado College. The Pioneers' overall win streak is one shy of tying the longest in program history, as the 1967-68 squad won each of its final 22 games en route to the program's fourth championship that season (Jan. 5-March 16, 1968).
LAST TIME OUT: The No. 1 Pioneers won both games in their NCHC opener in Grand Forks by defeating the No. 9-ranked Fighting Hawks 5-2 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.
Zeev Buium scored three goals on Friday for the first hat trick by a Denver defenseman in nearly 20 years, while
Aidan Thompson and
Sam Harris both produced a goal and an assist.
DU rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits on Saturday, with Thompson tallying the game-tying marker and
Boston Buckberger scoring his first career game-winning goal in the second period to give the Pioneers with weekend sweep in North Dakota. Goaltender
Matt Davis made 22 saves on Friday and stopped 21 shots on Saturday to help DU extend its undefeated start to the season.
HISTORIC WIN STREAK: The Pioneers have won 21 consecutive games dating back to last season on March 9 against Colorado College, the longest win streak across multiple seasons in program history. The previous DU record was 19 straight victories that the program accomplished twice before: Feb. 13-Dec. 13, 1960 and Jan. 13-Dec. 2, 1961.
Overall, DU's current 21-game stretch is one game shy of tying the longest overall winning streak in school history as the Pioneers won 22 contests in a row from Jan. 5-March 16, 1968 en route to the team's fourth national championship.
Denver went 9-1-0 in its last 10 games of 2023-24 and is 27-2-1 in the 30 contests since the start of February 2024.
RECORD START: DU has won its first 12 games of a season for the first time in school history; the previous record was victories in its first nine contests that was set by the 2001-02 squad (counting exhibition outings, DU actually won 11 consecutive games that year).
The Pioneers' 12 wins to start the season are the most by a defending national champion since 2000. In fact, it's more than double of the previous best start by a reigning champ as North Dakota in 2016-17 and Union in 2014-15 both won their first five contests before suffering their first losses.
ZEEV WITH THE TRICK & DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS: Sophomore defenseman
Zeev Buium recorded his first career hat trick on Friday at North Dakota to become the first Pioneer blueliner to score three goals in a game in nearly 20 years.
Ryan Caldwell was the last Denver D-man to tally three times when he accomplished the feat on Feb. 14, 2004 vs. Minnesota State, and Buium is the first DU rear guard to register a hat trick on the road since
Ian DeCorby at St. Cloud State on Dec. 29, 1990.
Buium's three markers were his first of the season and the first such performance by a Pioneer since
Jack Devine tallied four times on March 10, 2023 vs. Miami. It was just the third hat trick by a D-man in NCHC history, as Western Michigan's Ronnie Attard had the previous two: Oct. 19, 2021 at Colgate and Feb. 4, 2022 at Colorado College.
The NCHC named Buium the Defenseman of the Week—his first honor of the season and the fifth such weekly award of his career after picking up three D-man accolades and one Rookie honor as a freshman in 2023-24.
Overall, it was Buium's second career multi-goal game, joining his two-goal performance that included the overtime-winner in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinals on March 22, 2024 vs. St. Cloud State at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. His hat trick performance also marked his seventh career three-point game and second of the season (three assists on Oct. 5, 2024 at Alaska Anchorage).
The San Diego, California, native is tied with teammate
Eric Pohlkamp and Maine's Brandon Holt for the most points by a defensemen in the NCAA this season with 13. Buium's 10 assists are tied for the second-most among D-men in the country.

SAMMY SCORING: Sophomore
Sam Harris leads the nation in goals with 11 markers this year and tallied the game-winner in three straight contests: Nov. 8-9 vs. Lindenwood and Nov. 15 at North Dakota—the first time that a Pioneer has notched the winning tally in three consecutive outings in the last four years (since 2021-22).
The San Diego, California, native recorded his second multi-goal game of the year on Nov. 9 vs. Lindenwood (Oct. 5 at Alaska Anchorage), with both tallies coming in a matter of 5:49 to break a 1-1 take and mark the fastest two goals scored by a single Pioneer player this season.
