DENVER, CO --The Denver women's basketball team fell, 73-66, to the Colorado Christian Cougars on Monday night in Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Pioneers (0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who had 24 points and eight rebounds. Angelina Robles tacked on 13 points and six rebounds and Emily Counsel chipped in as well with 11 points.
Denver forced 15 Colorado Christian turnovers while committing 12 themselves in Monday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Alaisha Brown led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 11-9 advantage, Denver went on a 9-0 run with 1:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jones, to increase its lead to 20-9, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.
The Pioneers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 33-26 edge. Denver dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
Denver then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Cougars 49-46 entering the fourth. Denver played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
Colorado Christian kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 62-55 advantage before Denver went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jones' jumper, to shrink the deficit to 62-60 with 4:02 to go in the contest. Colorado Christian responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-66. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
