Denver Falls to Texas State

DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones and Emma Smith combined for 41 points but the Pioneers fell to the Texas State Bobcats, 63-60, at home on Sunday.

Jones led the Pioneers (5-6) with 22 points. Smith filled the stats sheet with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals and Angelina Robles chipped in as well with seven points.

Denver forced 15 Texas State turnovers. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Smith's three steals led the way for Denver.

How It Happened

After playing to a 4-4 tie early in the game, Denver went on an 8-0 run with 6:10 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Jones, to take a 12-4 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-10 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 15 points.

The Pioneers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-26.

Following halftime, Denver kept the Bobcats from growing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Robles, to trim its deficit to 39-38 with 4:57 to go in the third. The Pioneers kept the rally going and took control on a Smith free throw with 00:26 left for a 42-41 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.

Texas State proceeded to take a 51-46 lead before Denver went on a 5-0 run to even the score at 51 all with 4:30 to go in the contest. The Pioneers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Bobcats outscored them 12-9 the rest of the way to hand Denver the 63-60 loss. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
