NEW YORK – University of Denver men's soccer outside back Ian Smith was selected 14^th overall (Round 1, Pick 14) by the Portland Timbers in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft on Friday afternoon.

In 2024, Smith co-captained Denver back to the College Cup for the first time since 2016, playing in 21 of Denver's 23 matches, while tallying 14 points on two goals and 10 assists. Smith's assist total was good enough for the third-most in Denver's Division I history, and ranked seventh in the country in 2024.

The two-time Summit League First Team selection, and three-time selection overall, has played and started in 61 matches across his three years with the Pioneers, scoring six times and adding 21 assists. Smith currently sits third on Denver's career assist list, earning his 21^st in the Pios national semifinal game against Vermont last week.

Smith is the 14^th Pioneer to be selected in an MLS SuperDraft, all since 2009. Only Andre Shinyashiki (2019 – 5^th) and Reagan Dunk (2017 – 13^th) were taken higher up in the draft than Smith was on Friday.
