DENVER – University of Denver men's soccer senior attacking midfielder Sam Bassett has been named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Year, the publication announced on Tuesday.
In addition to the player of the year award, Bassett was named to the TDS Best XI First Team, while redshirt-senior and Atlanta United draft pick Ronan Wynne was named to the Best XI Second Team by the publication.
Bassett, who became Denver's third United Soccer Coaches' First Team All-America selection earlier this month, is Denver's second-ever finalist for the MAC Hermann, joining 2018 Denver striker Andre Shinyashiki.
Bassett was named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team, and after the All-America announcement, became the second two-time All-American in the program's history (Reagan Dunk, 2015-16). In the 2024 campaign, Bassett played and started in all 23 matches for the Pioneers, going the distance in 16 of those 23, including each of the final eight contests. Bassett led the Pioneers with 31 points on nine goals (co-team lead) and a single-season program record 13 assists.
The two-time Summit League Midfielder of the Year played in 77 matches in his DU career, producing 74 career points on 24 goals and 26 assists. Bassett's 77 appearances tied Kenny Akamatsu for 12th in Denver's Division I history, his assist total broke the school record, his goal total is good for third in DU history and his career point total only trailed Shinyashiki's 117.
A two-time Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, Wynne played and started in all 23 matches at outside back for the Pioneers in 2024, seeing 1978 minutes of action. Wynne had two goals and six assists for 10 points in the campaign, including a goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals against UMass on December 7.
Wynne was part of a Denver defense that was one of the top programs in the country in shots on goal against per game, and a defense that ranked eighth in the country in goals against average at 0.775.
In his career, Wynne played in 70 matches, making 69 starts for Jamie Franks side. Wynne produced 21 career points on four goals and 13 assists, including one game-winning goal.
Wynne joined Ian Smith as the second Pioneer this season and is the 15th Pioneer overall to be selected in an MLS SuperDraft, all since 2009.
The Pioneers finished the 2024 campaign with a 15-3-5 record and made a run to the program's second College Cup in program history.
