DENVER – University of Denver gymnast
Madison Ulrich was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The Denver freshman scored a near-perfect 9.975 in leading Denver to a program-record road score on bars (49.600) at West Virginia on February 18. Additionally, she equaled her career highs in the all-around (39.550) and on beam (9.875) in the meet with all four of her routines contributing to DU's 197.350, which tied the eighth-highest road score in program history.
On beam, her 9.875 came with the added pressure of needing a hit routine to ensure the team would not count a fall from earlier in the rotation, and her all-around mark again matched the second-highest away score by a DU freshman – an accomplishment she has now achieved twice.
Ulrich landed four podium finishes in the meet including winning the first bars title of her career. She also placed second in the all-around and on beam, and was third on floor.
This is the fourth Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award for Ulrich this season, and it is the eighth weekly Big 12 award for Denver in 2024. Senior
Jessica Hutchinson has been named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week twice, and junior
Mia Hebinck is a two-time Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week.
The No. 7-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team again hits the road for a Big 12 Conference meet, traveling to tie-No. 24 BYU on Friday, February 23.
