DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball program mourns the loss of former Pioneer great Joe Wallace Jr, who passed away on June 27 at the age of 73.
A member of Denver's All-20th Century Team, Wallace played in both the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons for the Pioneers. Wallace led DU in his final season with 23.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, helping the Pios to a 17-9 mark. The 23.1 points per game in 1972-73 is ninth in single-season points per game in DU history.
In Denver's record book, Wallace is third in career points per game (20.2) behind only former teammate John Johnson (22.2) and career leader Harry Hollines (25.1 1965-68). Wallace is 36th on Denver's career scoring list with 1,052 points, joining the Pioneers 1,000 point club in just 52 career contests.
Born in Henderson, Texas, a native of Colorado Springs and a long-time Denver resident, Wallace stayed in Denver following his graduation to channel his energy into his entrepreneurial pursuits.
